The club meets ONCE a month, on the third Thursday afternoon of the month from September to June. 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipe, 603 Wellington Crescent off Academy Rd just west of the Maryland St bridge. See other Computer Clubs also.

Member Norm Grywinski showed us Vista's Window's Moviemaker . Vista's version is very similar to the XP version . It is an easy to use, but full featured video editor. It comes with free both versions of Windows. Learn how to edit video clips from your video camcorder or the stills you can take with your still camera.

The topic was "Tips and Tricks": File Associations, XP Power Toys, etc). Tips were for both XP and Vista.

The presentation Computer Avenue who showed us the latest in hardware.

The presentation was on "What Microsoft Offers Photographers in Windows". We looked at several of the Wizards and utilities built into Windows XP, and culminated in looking at Windows Vista's "Photo Gallery" that combines most of what XP does and adds features such as tagging, captions and "fixing an image" right in the operating system.

The topic was Backup Strategies and Techniques . Demontsrated was Windows Backup and a program called SyncBack

Member Dolores Refvik did a great job of showing us Scrapbooks Plus from Ideasoft. Great for scrapbook pages, cards and more. Lots of templates and clipart; easy to use.

The presentation was on Internet Explorer 7. All the new features such as tabbed browsing, improved printing and security as well as the zoom features.

The computer club's Christmas party was held on this date. The presentation was a collection of entertaining and humourous sites.

The presentation was on the 2 major Winnipeg ISP's web mail service. MTS's web mail (by Richard Denesiuk) and Shaw's web mail (by Walter Kremers) were covered. The presentations included information on how to set up the extra account's and aliases that are include in each ISP's accounts.

Harold Marshall will present on Netscape 8.1 and its new features. Keith Bradley will show us how Firefox can work with free add-ons (i.e. extensions, plug-ins etc) to give added functionality to this great browser. Ab Reimer will show us Corel Photo Album 6.

The presentation was given by CRCC member Arlene Gavritsas on E-Mail SPAM. Great detail was given to this subject that is so dear to our hearts. Arlene gave details on how we get spam; how do we manage this problem and configured MailWasher.Pro. Different software was discussed for "spam blocking" including Outlook Express. Motion was passed to purchase a "spider" for the computer club and money towards Creative Retirement Endowment Fund.

November 20th/04 presentation was given by Michel Daw of Corel Corporation. He gave us a brief overview of Corel History. Demonstration of Word Perfect with bullets, real time preview, spread sheets, Quattro Pro, Power Point (presentation) and graphics. Keith Bradley gave a 20 year anniversary plaque to Richard.

Digital Cameras: an overview and what's new was presented by Andrew Flook of Don's Photo. He explained, (with the aid of some great graphics and the overhead and projected information on the screen) of how a digital camera works; the importance of pixels; mega pixels; battery life & factors effecting the battery; manipulating photos importance of long term storage of photos.

The presentation by Richard was on the Adobe Acrobat family. We are most familiar with the free Acrobat Reader v6 program. We found the site and downloaded it to the hard drive and installed it. We explored Reader, had a look at the main Acrobat program that creates Acrobat files, known as .PDF (Portable Document Format) files and more. Went through all the tool bar and demonstrated the "read aloud" function also demonstrated "my bookshelf and free ebooks.

Richard Denesiuk gave the lead in and Walter Kremers did the presentation on configuring your E-Mail in software (Outlook Express) to work properly and learn about the many numerous settings and how they can work for you. Other software was also discussed. Web mail was also explained by Richard. Ian Trenholm gave the latest financial report.

A presentation was given by Brian Lowe of the Winnipeg PC User Group, computer analyst/programmer here in Winnipeg. Brian did a presentation on Linux, an alternative operating system that is giving Windows a "run for its money". He demonstrated the "Knoppix" distribution: full-featured Linux distribution that boots from a CD. Includes the latest version of KDE and OpenOffice. Can be used to work from Linux on PCs without actually installing it, so it is ideal for demonstrations of Linux. Based on Debian. Kmail was shown with different configuration and Open Office can work with many M.S. document formats plus excel. Linux: free to low cost, very capable, very secure operating system with lots of software available.

COMPUTERS AND MUSIC: A brief overview of the dominant types of computer music files such as midi, MP3 and wav, minimal hardware/software considerations, on-line download of midi files, with a focus on home creation of conventional audio CD's for personal use, from midi files . Internet sources will be provided. Presented by Terry Smythe.
A very enjoyable demonstration to the workings of player piano music rolls being scanned to the end result of being put on a CD was the subject of this month's demonstration. The rebirth of player piano music was given by Terry Smythe. From the making of his own scanner to scan these rolls to converting them onto a CD. File extension were gone over, software used and music sites were given out and also listed on Creative Retirements web site.

There were no new nomination for the executive and therefore the same executive is in by acclamation again this year.

Richard Denesiuk gave a very indepth demonstration on taking your music from a vinyl record on a turn table and transferring it to your computer hard drive and then with software cleaning up the music and tweaks in taking the noise level out. The different volume controls were explained also. The software had many capabilities on separating the songs in an album of music plus many other features in regards to volume and editing out the unnecessary parts. The end results was then heard and transferred to a cd. An overview of winter courses were discussed. Sig dates for the month of Janurary were given out. Two great movies were shown that were shot and edited by some of the members of the video editing SIG. A motion was brought forward and seconded on buying a good DVD burner.

Jason from A&B Sound gave a great demonstration on different makes of digital cameras. He went through what to look for to get the camera to fit your needs plus your budget. Different types of lenses plus what to look for when wanting to attach different lenses to your camera. Sensors, flashes, batteries, memory cards, and audio in your camera were also discussed and demonstrated. The size of a picture best suited for your camera plus pixels for a good quality picture when print or for sending it as an email were talked about. Irfan View software was used to demonstrate how to manipulate our pictures. Jason answered questions from the audience and gave away prizes. Coffee and our own club business as well as questions and answers followed.

Computer Avenue presents on Hardware and Upgrade Strategies. Computer Avenue gave us a very informative demonstration on the inside of a computer case with all the components and where they are situated. Then Jim showed us many add-on such as CD writer, Dvd burner, video card, Router , sound card, power supply, etc. Wireless router, cards, mouse and keyboard were also explained. Logitech speakers, Epson printer/scanner were also on display. Ryan gave an intensive overview on the maintenance of your computer. Questions were asked from the members and answered by the Computer Avenue group. Computer Avenue were generous in giving away three great gifts.

First meeting of the Season. Erin Taves from Information Technology Security Awareness at the Mb. Government gave a great talk on computer security. Slides and a short video ("Identity Theft") helped demonstrate viruses, worms and credit card fraud. Questions on these subjects followed. Erin handed out a links document and Public Advisory: Special Report for Consumers on IDENTITY THEFT .

Richard gave a demonstration on Networking. Each step of the demo was supported by pictures to give us an excellent view of exactly how connections plus the hardward etc. looked. He showed how to install the network card, hardware and also the software plus all the configuration for file and printer sharing. Explanations were given also for configuring read only sharing verses full access. Routers (wireless also) were also talked about plus the advantage of being a firewall as well. . Meeting moved up one week to "second Friday of the month" to avoid Good Friday conflict.

Norn Leach, Keith Bradley and Richard Denesiuk presented on popup stopper Free Surfer, Spam filter Mail Washer, web bug checker Adawareand how to set up message filters/rules in Outlook Express and Netscape Messenger.

This first day of spring brought out a full house of smiling faces. Richard opened the meeting with a talk on Spam and those annoying popups we get. A demo was given by Richard on "free Surfer" using Internet Exployer and Netscape 7.2. We went through most of the toolbars also Keith Bradley gaves us a demostration on "Ad-Aware" V6.0. He did a partial scan and toolbar explanation also Norm Leach and Richard went through a demonstration of "Mail Washer" V2.0. They demonstrated how to convert your existing mail address over to "Mail Washer" and showed how to use it to get rid of most of your spam. Richard demonstrated also how to filter out unwanted email using Netscape and Outlook Express. After coffee there were many questions and answers on various problems plus a discussion on the pro's and con's of the "Linux" operating system.

Richard opened the meeting by welcoming members &new members to the meeting. He urged members to send articles to Peter Prystupa for the Newsletter. Richard started a presentation on copying &writing to CD-R/CD-RW but ran into a problem with CD direct &had to continue an oral presentation. Richard also mentioned that a subscription of "Smart Computing" was taken out for 2 years &will be available to the members. A way to loan it out has to be worked out. He mentioned that the new computer at the computer club is being used &is working out well. Questions and Answer period followed.

John Buchanan gave a very detailed demonstration on Digital cameras from the batteries to lenses. . It started from taking the picture and transferring it to the computer. He then showed how you can manipulate the picture. The next step of printing the picture was also discussed as well as burning to a CD.

Presentations on Graphics software: Keith Bradley showed us Paint Shop Pro 5.0, and Ron Day showed us Print Artist. Both are very capable and inexpensive programs. Paint Shop Pro is a full blown graphics editor and Print Artist is a package that come with tons of customizable, cards, calendars, business cards, posters, etc. Our new executive was voted in, congratulations to all our officers. Annual Computer Club Social, December 4/98

We will have the second annual Creative Computer Club Social on Friday, December 4/98, at lecture room 2, 185 Smith Street. Tickets are $5 each. Admission includes refreshments, snacks and a chance at a door prizes. We will have a silent auction. We need prizes, we are also looking for a second punch bowl

 
 
 

Computer Sale, Nov 24/98

The annual Computer sale of the Creative Retirement Computer Club will be held at Lecture Room 1, 185 Smith Street, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 24. We will have about a dozen 386 computers for sale at an asking price in the $200 range. There will be several dot matrix printers, and lots of software and books available. Don't miss a chance for a great deal on a used computer.

 
 
 

November Meeting, Nov 20/98

Keith Bradley (club president) did an excellent presentation on Dragon Dictates "Naturally Speaking" software, voice recognition software. While the software is not flawless, and gets better as one "trains" it to recognize the user's speech patterns, it shows GREAT promise and was a very informative and entertaining presentation.

October Meeting, Oct 18/98

There were 130 in attendance at this meeting. Richard Denesiuk gave a presentation on Windows Explorer. There was a draw for 3 copies of Paint Shop 5.0. The question and answer period went well with no shortage of questions and a good supply of answers as well.

September Meeting, Sep 16/98

First meeting of the 98/99 season. There were 125 out for this meeting, a new record! We had a presentation by Roger Creightonan independent writer who showed us Paint Shop Pro. He left us with several copies of the software which will be given away at the October meeting by a draw.


 All Computer Club registrations must be renewed at this time ($20). Registration in the Computer Club requires a Creative Retirement membership ( $15 annual fee)
