Reminder

Now an empty nest can be viewed in a barren tree
Silhouetted against a January sky.
This brings back fond memories of your stay with me
Of Nature's works, her plan, and reasons why.

We noted activity, noise and conflict of deeds
When you came to our garden in May.
You ferociously devoured our worms and seeds
And then you decided to stay.

Long warm and humid days assisted Nature's plan
A nest was built high in my tree,
Close enough to earth to be viewed by man
But truly reaching heavenly.

The long hot summer days were quiet
Your duty was then fulfilled.
The hungry brood called out for diet
No way could you be stilled.

In fall you gleefully congregate
Such hustle is hard to understand.
Why are you in a hurry to segregate
And leave our garden, tree and land?

We humans too are part of Nature's law — unspoken
We have a vital role you see,
To remind me of this as a lasting token:
You left me your nest in my garden tree.
