Jean Young
I was walking down our attractive back lane
Taking in all the sights and sounds around
When I spied an apple tree
Loaded with fruit around.
Now I quickly walked toward the fence.
One apple was leaning over into the lane!
I quickly felt and adjudged it to be edible!
Well, the story goes — it was just lovely! So much so I kept my eye on the tree
As I jaunted down the lane.
The apples were very red now...
Clearly another taste was in order!
Hastily I climbed the fence.
A loud voice spoke, "What are you doing?"
"Oh, Oh! Am I caught stealing?"
A young lady said, "Well, if you bring a bag
I will fill it full for you."
Feeling somewhat guilty, I laughed and replied,
"Yes, I'm stealing."We had a lovely visit and things progressed.
She gave me apples again the following year.
We often have coffee, snacks, and exchange views.
She came to Winnipeg from the Maritimes and tells me
about her childhood there.
One day we were having coffee and I looked out, "Whoops,
pardon me! Someone is driving away in my car!"
I question all my misdeeds.
It may not be right to steal (sometimes),
but look what a friend I got.
