Summer

summer
summer
oh what joy
running free
through fields
and meadows
running
jumping
singing
shouting
summer
summer
oh what joy
take off
your shoes
socks and
sweater
wading through
the clear
cool brook
to the
forest edge
we wander
weaving crowns
and daisy chains
summer
summer
full of wonder
summer
summer
full of joy
my poor
brother
leads the cows
to the pasture
in yonder field
he lies down
reading
dreaming
on these lazy
summer days
and the cows
keep grazing
moving from
the pasture
almost bare
to a field
not ours
but one
full of tender
growing wheat
oh poor boy
how dare he
be lazy
reading
dreaming
on a
summer's
hot midday
man is coming
scolding
cursing
wielding stick
you jump
and run
to catch
the cows
and lead
them home
these were days
I still
remember
lazy hazy
summer days
summer
summer
full of wonder
summer
summer
full of joy
