Q

My neighbor is 71 and is taking PROPACET for his bursitis. They have looked it up in the PDR and could not find it. Where can I go to find information about this drug?

A

Your neighbour is taking one of several combinations of propoxyphene (Darvon) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) ... propoxyphene is very similar to codeine and is included in the general category 'narcotic analgesics' ... the combination is very effective as an analgesic and likely takes good care of your neighbour's pain. It is worth noting that this medicine can make some people drowsy or dizzy ... take care if driving a car or using machinery. Ask physician or pharmacist before taking any other medicine including over-the-counter products. Check with physician if taking any other preparation that could make you drowsy such as sedatives or sleeping pills. Avoid drinking alcohol. Check with physician before stopping treatment if it has continued for several weeks, as smaller and smaller doses may be required before stopping completely.

Best wishes to you and your neighbour.
