Questions and Answers

Q

I have a question in regards to Diveticulites and the medicine I was prescribed. I have wonderful result from Augementen. The problem that I have is that my insurance has excluded treatment for this for three years. So unless I have a bad flair up I try to keep the prescribed drugs on hand in which I have been going to Mexico to get.

My question is that it clears up in a day or so and does not come back. This is with a mild flair up. I do not think the antibotics will work that fast so I was wondering if there is something else in the pill that is clearing it up that I would not need a prescription for and if so where to get it.

I also have come to the conclusion that it is linked to stress. Also while on this medicine I have less indigestion and am more regular. That is the other reason why I would like to know if there is an ingredient in the Augementin that would help. I am also only 28.

I also have a narrow place in my colon, and take Zantac &/or Pecid almost everyday.

Would apprieciate some comments

Hi Don ... sorry to hear about your problem.

Augmentin in the tablet form contains, as well as the two antibacterial components, eight so called 'fillers'. Included in these are derivatives of cellulose and methylcellulose, and magnesium stearate.

Methylcellulose (Citrocel Lax) and Magnesium sulphate (Epsom Salts) are both effective cathartics (purgatives) and laxatives , and available as over-the-counter preparation.

It is possible that the fillers closely related to these two may also be acting beneficially on your affected colon. It may be worthwhile trying quite small doses of each/both, but only in consultation with your physician/gastroenterologist.
Best wishes.
