Questions and Answers
My father is 67 years old. He has diabetes and has been taking insulin shots for almost 15 years now. A few months ago he was told that his kidneys were only functioning at 30%. His doctor put him on a strict diet; no sodium, and low potassium. He was told if he sticks to this diet he will probably be able to avoid dialysis for 2 more years. They check the protien levels in his urine often and it was 3100 the last time.
My question is if his kidneys are functioning at such a low percentage will it cause protien to be released into the body and cause swelling of extremities and water retention?
He is taking several
medications, I'm not sure what they are. I'm not even sure what
questions we should be asking.
CAN YOU HELP ME GAIN SOME INSIGHT?
Hi ... sorry to hear about your father.
You should be talking to his endocrinologist/urologist since this is outside my area of expertise.
I do know that it is MOST important to meticulously attend to his
dietary management. Also, since his kidney function is significantly
reduced, reduction may be required in the dosage/s of whatever drug/s he is
taking (many drugs are excreted unchanged in the urine).
Best wishes to you and your father.
