Q

Last night 3 days after my 75 year old mother had open heart surgery (5 bypass) the hospital gave her 15 mg of Restoril at midnight to help her sleep. She totally tripped out. She took off her clothes and was going to the barn with her mom and dad who have been dead for 30 years. She grabbed at objects in the air that were not there. She said that people were trying to kill my sister in law who was staying with her. All vital signs remained normal. This lasted for 8 hours.

The other drugs she was on are: Veraparil, Lasix, Pepcid, Cortisone, Colace, KCL, Ceftin. We won't be giving her anymore Restoril again. My question - has this happened before? Oh yes she is doing great again today just as she was yesterday. It was quite a night.

Hi Chris ... sorry to hear about your mother.

Yes, Restoril (temazepam) may have such effects on a very small proportion of treated patients. Among such affects are listed - euphoria, confusion, increase in dreaming, hallucinations, overstimulation, and so on.

The dose she was given is the usual dose, although some recommend half this amount for elderly patients.

Best wishes to you and your mother.
