Questions and Answers

- My boyfriend is 36 years old and was diagnosed with Diverticulitis
about 5 years ago. He had surgery to remove the affected part of his
intestine. My question is are there certain symptoms that he should watch
for in case of a reoccurrence? He has been having problems with constipation
for the past week and is concerned that he may be getting sick again. You
should also be advised that he is overweight and does not follow the diet
prescribed to him. Thank you.

- ... sorry to hear about your boyfriend.
Having been through the mill once before, he should recognise his
previous progression and be aware of the need for medical intervention when
required. This may involve hospitalization and treatment with bed rest, pain
relievers, antibiotics, fluids given intravenously, and careful monitoring.
Laxatives and enemas should be used sparingly. However, by the sound of it
he is the victim of his own non-compliance - he was probably prescribed a
diet rich in fibre (whole-grain cereals and breads, fruits, and vegetables)
which you say he does not follow. Such a diet helps to prevent constipation
and promote a healthy digestive tract. However, it shouldn't be dashed into
- considerable intestinal discomfort may occur with the too rapid adoption
of the diet, take it easy - aim for full compliance within a few weeks.
Best wishes to you and your boyfriend.
