Questions and Answers

Q
2 years ago my mother was diagnosed with a severe case of Diverticulitus. After many different types of tests and treatments, the Doctors decided that the only solution to her problem was to operate on her and remove the infected parts of the colon. After the surgery, the Doctors advised her to maintain a high fiber diet and to avoid certain items such as nuts,..etc, which she has been following religiously. The Doctors also said that it would be highly unlikely that this would occur again.

Well, unfortunately, last week my mother was again admited into the Hospital for Diverticulitus pains. After 2 days of Antibiotics, she was released earlier today and the Doctors at the Hospital said that she could continue on as usual.

We are just afraid that this could become serious again and that she would have to go through another painfull surgery and maybe completely have her colon removed. Is there any advice or recommendations you can give us as to what she should do so that this illness does not occur again?

... sorry to hear about your mother ... I regret I'm not qualified to give you advice or recommendation - my doctorate is in basic medical sciences ... I can, however, give you current opinions based on my access to appropriate texts, and my extensive connections in the clinical sector.

Unfortunately, diverticula, once formed, are permanent. No treatment has been found to prevent complications. Diet high in fibre with adequate fluids increases stool bulk and prevents constipation, and theoretically may help prevent further diverticular formation or worsening of the condition. Bulk additives such as Metamucil are also used. There are some dietary prohibitions, but your mother seems to be very compliant in this.

Most attacks of diverticulitis, usually mild, are treated conservatively with bed rest, antibiotics, tender loving care, etc. Further surgical resection usually follows the presence of perforation, fistula or abscess. Surgery may also be suggested for patients with frequent, recurring attacks of diverticulitis leading to multiple courses of antibiotics, hospitalization , and deterioration in personal wellbeing.

Hope this is of some help.

Best wishes to you and your mother.
