My mother is 85 years old and has had a list of family problems over the last few years which has taken their tole. My sister is being treated for cancer, Her son got divorced and so on.

Her doctor prescribed Apo-Nortriptyline for depression. What are the side effects and how will this drug affect her. (10 mg)

... sorry to hear about your mother. Nortriptyline is one of the most commonly used antidepressants ... the dose is on the low side but her physician may be taking her age into account and may modify the dosage depending on effectiveness and/or side effects. Its effects are seen only after 2-3 weeks.

Side effects are not uncommon - these include orthostatic hypotension, abnormalities in heart rate, sedation, toxic delirium, weight gain - there are others, but they're much less common. Doesn't sound good does it? Actually, proper titration of dosage guided by measurements of the serum levels of the drug (there is much variation between individuals) will help to maximize the benefits and minimize the undesirables.

She should avoid taking any other drugs, even aspirin, without consulting her physician.
