Thirteen years ago I was i an acident and broke my back in seven places, crushed my pelvis hip and knee. I walk normal look normal but there are times the pain is to much just to walk. I go to the Stanford Pain Center and I have a very trying Psychiatrist. Elavil helps but I was just plain stupid, I am now tyring Paxal but I just want to fall asleep. I am also on baclafen, methadone and relafen. Is there an antidepresant that does not take away your memory or make you so tired you can't drive? Antidepresants do help with pain but is it worth it?
A
Unfortunately all antidepressants have a spectrum of side-effects , many, such as the ones you describe, are common and represent an extension of the desired effect. The incidence and severity vary a lot from patient to patient. However, they are dose-related so the unwanted effects will decrease in incidence and severity with decrease in dose. You may consult with your psychiatrist to pick the one most effective in relieving your pain and try decreasing the dosage until you feel it's time to go back up a bit - you'll be coming to a balance between wanted and unwanted effects. And, please comply 100 per cent with your prescriptions otherwise no-one will be able to judge effectiveness.

Yes it is worth it ... give it your best shot!

Best wishes.
