Q
Please explain what the drug called Paxel is and how it is used to treat depression, also could you please let me know of any side effects?
A
Paxil (paroxetine) is one of several SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) used to treat depression. You're probably more familiar with 'Prozac' which was the first introduced. They act by modulating serotonin neurotransmitters in the brain. The usual starting dosage is 20 mg. per day, but may be titrated up to 40 or 50 mg. per day if required. It takes a while until an effect is felt, a delay of up to 3-4 weeks.

Caution has to be observed if taken with some other drugs and in the presence of renal and/or liver disease - your physician will be familiar with your medical history, and advise you accordingly. The initial dosage should be reduced in the elderly. Caution should be observed in operatinghazardous machinery, including automobiles, until there is reasonablecertainty that the drug does not affect the ability to engage in such activities.

Side-effects are not uncommon. The most commonly observed adverse effects in controlled clinical trials were:- asthenia ( lack or loss of strength ), sweating, nausea, decreased appetite, somnolence, dizziness, insomnia, tremor, nervousness, ejaculatory disturbences and other male genital disorders. There are others, but these are the most common.

Trust this will be helpful ... best wishes.
