Q
Do you know of any research regarding Trazodone and pediatric patients? My nephew is 15 and a half, currently on ridilin, and was recently prescribed 50mg per day of Traz. In addition to his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder, he has begun to exhibit some agressive behavior...has Trazodone been tested for children? And what are the major side effects.

I appreciate your consideration.

Hi... sorry to hear about your nephew.

First, just to be sure, he's currently being treated with Ritalin ( methylphenidate ) not ridilin for his disorder.

Second, my latest information is six months old, but safety and effectiveness of trazodone in children below the age of 18 have not been established.

Like most antidepressants, the side-effects of trazodone are many. Most common are marked sedation, dizziness, hypotension and nausea. Because of its sedative properties, a large proportion of a daily dose is often administered at bedtime. Priapism ( prolonged or inappropriate penile erection ) is an uncommon but serious side-effect, and surgical intervention has been required in about 1/3 of cases reported. In some, permanent impairment of erectile function or impotence resulted.

The usual daily dosage is 150 - 200 mg. - extreme daily dosage is 50 - 600 mg., the lower figure for very elderly patients.

Best wishes to you and your nephew.
